One of the big names in the race to be Orange County's next mayor says he knows how to cut taxes, despite the struggling economy. WFTV took a hard look Tuesday at Commissioner Bill Segal's plan to save homeowners money. His plan would allow the county to cut property taxes by as much as $10 million a year for the next two years.

Orange County Commissioner Bill Segal enlisted some big-name Democrats over the weekend to knock on doors for his county mayor campaign, bringing Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and state Rep. Geraldine Thomspon along on canvassing drives. Segal’s walk was mainly geared to tout his 27-point plan to bring jobs to Orange County, but it also highlights his overwhelming advantage in endorsements. Dyer is the biggest local Democrat in town, and he lined up behind Segal early, and endorsed him more publicly later in the race.

Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty sent a letter to County Sheriff Jerry Demings Monday night saying his proposed budget is too high and needs to be slashed by five percent. Orange County Commissioner Bill Segal proposed raising booking fees at the Orange County jail from $5 to $50, and increasing charges by $1 for all inmates to generate revenue which would go directly to deputies. "Anything we can do to raise more funds without raising taxes; it's the old thing, crime doesn't pay but criminals should," said Segal.

Orange County government leaders said online travel companies are cheating taxpayers. They claim online travel companies, like Expedia and Orbitz, are not giving counties all the tourist tax money they collect and a proposed state law would allow them to keep doing that. Eight million dollars in bed taxes should go to Orange County a year, but Commissioner Bill Segal said the county is losing out on it, hurting tourism and residents. "Horrible idea, they're basically robbing the coffers of Orange County. This money is due to Orange County. Everybody else has to pay it. They're going to skate on it," Segal said.
